The cultural center with the retractable shell pulled back the veil on Jan. 11, with Meet at The Shed, a free-admission event that saw 6,000 visitors attend its first-ever open house.

Having made its debit in April 2019, the new Hudson Yards destination dedicated to commissioning, producing, and presenting performing arts, visual arts, and pop culture gave all comers a primer on its plate of offerings.

Both gallery exhibitions, Agnes Denes: Absolutes and Intermediates and Manual Override were open, with artist- and curator-led tours of Agnes Denes taking place throughout the day.

Elsewhere, crew vs. crew street dance battles between D.R.E.A.M. Ring and It’s Showtime NYC popped up, popping and locking, in the lobby; food trucks were stationed inside The McCourt, a sprawling theater space; and the music in the air was spun by DJ Synchro, DJ April Hunt, and DJ Bembona.

Visitors left wanting more, or those who missed this formidable freebie, can anticipate March 10, when The Shed’s 2020 season launches with the world premiere of Help, a Shed-commissioned theater work by Claudia Rankine, starring Roslyn Ruff. For more info, visit theshed.org.
