BY SCOTT STIFFLER | After years spent perfecting his baking skills, former attorney and longtime Village resident DongJu Song took a leap of faith that landed him in Chelsea, as founder/owner of The Sleeping Cat (160 Seventh Ave. btw. W. 19th & 20th Sts.). As we noted in a recent small business profile (click here to read it), Song’s bakery will specialize in “classic American desserts with a respect for a tradition, but the liberty to add some modern and global tweaks.”

Finally, after months of construction on-site and an equal amount of time spent building up anticipation online, The Sleeping Cat is poised to wake, rise, and shine, during its “soft-open” weekend of January 27-28.

To celebrate, Song is offering a special deal to those who’ve joined The Sleeping Cat email subscriber list. News of the bakery’s progress in anticipation of its opening has been showing up in subscriber IN boxes for months—and in his most recent communication, Song had this to say: “If you come in this weekend and tell us you’re an email subscriber, you will get 50% off your order. In return, we ask just two things: that you roll with our opening hiccups, and that you fill out a short survey about what you think about the food, the space, and the overall feel.”

Not a member of the subscriber list—not yet, at least? Then click here to visit the bakery’s website and scroll down the page until you reach the instruction that reads, “Enter your email to get updates.” The final step of this process: Visit The Sleeping Cat from 9am-6pm, Sat./Sun., January 27/28—and give one or two or more things on the menu a try—at 50% off, of course.

“We can’t wait to welcome you in and share everything we’ve been working on for the past months,” said Song, in his email message to subscribers. “The food is as delicious as we can make it, the room is beautiful and comforting, and we are so excited for you to see and enjoy it with us.”
