Compelled to move from its longtime 250 West 23rd Street location to make way for a massive, block-spanning residential/retail project, Apple Bank Chelsea didn’t fall far from the tree, so to speak, when realizing its desire to remain a visible presence in the neighborhood. The bank’s relocation destination is, in fact, right around the corner.

Open for business as of August 12, Apple Bank Chelsea’s new address (278 Eighth Ave. at West 24th St.), finds it sharing the ground floor space of a newly constructed 14-story, mixed-use residential building with Chelsea’s first Target store—certain to increase the area’s already robust foot traffic upon opening later this fall.

Working from an office on the bank’s West 24th Street side (whose tall, wide, and plentiful windows are perfect for piquing the interest of  passersby) is Assistant Vice President/Branch Manager Mohamed Ali–who agreed to represent Apple Bank Chelsea in the Q&A to be found directly below.

Scott Stiffler, for Chelsea Community News (CCNews): Mr. Ali, how long have you been with Apple Bank, and how long have you been with the Chelsea branch?

Mohamed Ali, Assistant Vice President/Branch Manager (Mr. Ali): I have been with Apple Bank for over 19 years. I have been in the Chelsea location from 2016 to 2019 and then from March 2023 to the present.

CCNews: What are the specifics of your job, and has that changed in any way because of the new location?

Mr. Ali: My job is to attract new consumer and business prospects in Chelsea. We are educating our customers for Online Banking and Automation, as we move forward.

CCNews: I have a business checking and a personal savings account at TD Bank, on West 23rd and Seventh Ave. Why should I make the move to Apple Bank, Chelsea?

Mr. Ali: Apple Bank offers a variety of personal and business products—both interest-bearing and non-interest-bearing. My team and I provide personal attention to our customers.

CCNews: This question is from Thùy Phạm (president of the 200 W23W24 Street Block Association): Are there promotional incentives for new customers to open an account?

Mr. Ali: Yes. We have ongoing promotions at the branch, especially for new prospects.

CCNews: The bank is on the street level, full of windows, and very visible. What’s that been like and does it have any advantages/disadvantages compared to your prior location?

Mr. Ali: We have been extremely pleased with the new location, and we have [from the outside looking in] great visibility—especially when the lights are on at night. We have been receiving positive comments.

CCNews: This question is from longtime West 21st Street resident Pamela Wolff: Will you continue to have a Notary Public on staff and if so, what days/hours?

Mr. Ali: I am the Notary Officer of the branch. Please call ahead for an appointment (212-367-7830).

CCNews: This question is also from Pamela Wolff: Will you mount the West 23rd Street location’s wall clock at this new location?

Those familiar with Apple Bank’s West 23rd Street location will recognize the clock, now keeping (not marking) time on 8th Ave. & W. 24th St. | Photo by Scott Stiffler

Mr. Ali: The clock isn’t just a timepiece, but a symbol of Apple Banks’ rich history and our ongoing commitment to blending modern banking with the storied legacy of the communities we serve. Come check out the newly restored clock— inside the branch and visible to the public.

CCNews: This is a second question from the 200 W23W24 Street Block Association’s Thùy Phạm: Will Apple Bank or building management maintain the tree pits and sidewalks outside your office windows (on both West 24th Street and Eighth Avenue)?

Mr. Ali: The building management, Chelsea Canvas, oversees tree pits and sidewalks.

CCNews: Is it correct that the safe deposit boxes from your longtime West 23rd Street location did not accompany you to this new address? Will safe deposit boxes be offered at your new location?

Mr. Ali: Safe deposit boxes will not be offered at the new location. We have other locations that do.

CCNews: Will there be (or did I miss it) a Grand Opening or some sort of “welcome” event before the year is out? Borrowing from what Thuy asked about incentives: Are there any annual events or promotions? Will you be visible in the community at things like street fairs or block association events?

Mr. Ali: Apple Bank Chelsea will have our AppleConnect event on October 22. Apple Bank will gladly participate in street fairs and block associations, once invited.

Note: Of the AppleConnect event, Mr. Ali also said, “Apple Bank is pleased to invite you to our upcoming AppleConnect networking event on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 278 8th Avenue, New York, NY, 10011. The event will take place from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. We would be honored to have you join us as we bring together community leaders, customers, partners, and members of the bank’s executive team to connect and share ideas.”
