Warm Up to Market 57’s Cold Weather Comfort Foods
At Pier 57 (25 11th Ave. at W. 15th St.)
BY SCOTT STIFFLER | November’s nearly over, which means that chill in the air is about to settle in for a long winter whose nip has real bite. But what to do? West Side crowds faced with this conundrum are well-advised to breeze through the doors of Pier 57 and head for the Market 57 food hall, where a number of renowned eateries have just adjusted their menus to include fortifying and familiar “Comfort Food Specials.”
At. Little Banchan Shop, Korean American restauranteur and Michelin-star chef Hooni Kim serves up miyeok guk, a savory beef and seaweed soup traditionally served on the morning of someone’s birthday to wish them another healthy year. Want to shake up tradition while still instilled with respect for it? Order the seaweed brisket soup.
At meaty Italian sandwich shop Due Madri, wives Erika Nakamura and Jocelyn Guest have used their clout as co-owners to arrange the return of their Italian wedding soup (stocked with fennel chicken meatballs, kale, and Sflogini shells), and the panna al pomodoro (made with roasted prosciutto, and basil croutons).
The strength in numbers advantage of matrimony is also on the mind at Mijo, the bold Mexican eatery owned by husband-and-wife Danny Ortiz de Montellano and Fany Gerson. There, winter menu favorites including chilaquiles and tortilla soup have just returned.
