BY SCOTT STIFFLER | A January 2, 2025 election for the position of Elliott-Chelsea Houses Tenants Association President will be certified, says the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).
Word of the impending certification came to Chelsea Community News in a January 17 email statement sent by NYCHA Press Secretary Michael Horgan. It read, in full:
“NYCHA received a protest in response to the Elliott-Chelsea Houses tenant association election held on January 2, 2025, and after careful review, has determined that the facts do not warrant overturning the election. Therefore, the protest has been denied, and the election will be certified. A second election for the offices of Sergeant at Arms (1 and 2) will be conducted because the NYCHA election notices posted leading up to the election and the ballot used during the January 2 election did not clearly distinguish that there are two Sergeant at Arms positions up for election.”
The election result represents a shakeup in leadership and philosophy, with challenger Renee Keitt besting longtime TA President Darlene Waters. A January 3 press statement noted Keitt “ran on an anti-demolition platform, advocating for tenant-led solutions and greater community involvement in decision-making.” (Opposition to “demolition” refers to a desired course of action from Related Companies, whose plan to enter into a public/private partnership with NYCHA would see the real estate development company build anew currently standing structures at Elliott-Chelsea and nearby Fulton Houses.)
