Soup’s on, as they say, on Seventh Avenue. The narrow little storefront at 180 Seventh Ave. has a new occupant, primed to mke a lasting go of it, at a location whose previous food-centric occupants include Fatbird and Creamline. As for the lines at Hale & Hearty, they’re out the door, with the comforting food and reasonable prices proving a strong draw for the lunch crowd. Chelsa Community News recently posed a few questions to Hale & Hearty Chelsea’s ownership. The results yielded the below Q&A.

Scott Stiffler, for Chelsea Community News (CCNews): Hale & Hearty is a familiar name. Are there other Manhattan locations, and is this one on Seventh and West 21st individually owned, a franchise, or what?

Nicholas Corella, Retail Operations Administrative Coordinator for Hale & Hearty (Nick): Hale & Hearty is a well-known New York brand that has long been synonymous with soup in Manhattan. The Chelsea location is locally owned and operated under the Hale & Hearty name, allowing it to uphold the brand’s standards while maintaining a strong, hands-on connection to the neighborhood it serves.

CCNews: Why choose Chelsea, and this particular location, for the store?

Nick: Chelsea is a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood with a strong sense of community and a diverse population of residents, office workers, and visitors. This location allows us to serve people throughout the day—from morning commuters to lunchtime office crowds and neighborhood residents in the evening—while being situated on a well-traveled corridor that naturally connects the community.

CCNews: Have you been in touch with, or do you plan to reach out to, local block associations, Chambers of Commerce, the Community Board (MCB4) and/or other local groups of interest? What sort of community outreach are you engaged in and/or plan for the future?

Nick: We view ourselves as a neighborhood business and are committed to being an engaged, responsible presence in the community. We plan to maintain open lines of communication with local organizations and are exploring opportunities to participate in neighborhood initiatives, local events, and partnerships that support the Chelsea community. Our goal is to build long-term relationships and contribute positively to the area.

CCNews: Where do the ingredients for your soups and sandwiches come from?

Nick: Our soups, sandwiches, wraps, and salads are prepared using thoughtfully sourced ingredients from trusted suppliers who meet our quality and food safety standards. Sandwiches, wraps, and salads are made fresh in house every day, with a focus on freshness, consistency, and flavor. All menu items are prepared with care to deliver high-quality comfort food guests can rely on.

CCNews: Before January 12’s official opening, you had a week’s worth of soft launch business. What menu items have proved especially popular so far?

Nick: During the soft launch, guests gravitated toward the classic soups Hale & Hearty is known for. Standout favorites included Classic Chicken Noodle, Cream of Tomato with Chicken and Orzo, Vegetarian Split Pea, and Tuscan White Bean with Spinach, along with other rotating offerings. Guests also responded enthusiastically to the artisan paninis, including the New York Cuban & Char & Cured Rueben and the signature classic grilled cheeses. Familiar flavors paired with generous portions resonated strongly with early customers.

CCNews: Is there a drink, soup, sandwich, or other item that customers might be surprised to find on the menu?

Nick: While many guests arrive expecting traditional comfort soups, they are often pleasantly surprised by the breadth of the menu. Items such as Broken Lasagna soup and New England Clam Chowder stand out, alongside a wide range of vegetarian soups and panini options. The menu has also expanded to include tater tot entrées, featuring crispy, fluffy-on-the-inside tater tots topped with a variety of sauces, dressings, chilis, and soups. Early favorites include the Classic Tots, finished with smoked paprika, a light toss of salt, and a drizzle of house-made chipotle ranch dressing.

CCNews: What are your hours of business, and are there items that you expect to find popular with the morning, lunch, and dinner crowds?

Nick: The Chelsea location is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The menu is especially well suited to lunch and early dinner, with soups, sandwiches, salads, paninis, and wraps proving most popular during peak midday and evening hours.

CCNews: Soup is one of the ultimate comfort foods. Are there menu choices that are especially appealing to our appetite for a sense of nostalgia or well-being?

Nick: Soup is at the heart of Hale & Hearty, and for many guests it is more than comfort food. It is a staple. The menu features the soups people have loved for years, rooted in familiar, home-style flavors that evoke warmth, nostalgia, and a sense of well-being. At the same time, the rotating selection allows for the introduction of new soups that feel just as comforting and have the potential to become future favorites within the community. Together, the menu balances tradition and evolution, reinforcing Hale & Hearty’s place as a destination for soup in Chelsea.
