BY SCOTT STIFFLER | Chelsea Market’s proud history as a groundbreaking food hall has bestowed many claims to fame upon the steadfast structure. But perhaps the sweetest one of all hails from the building’s industrial past–specifically, March 6, 1912. That’s the fateful date when, we’ve been known to note (by quoting writer Laura Rutherford), “Oreo cookies were first developed and produced by Nabisco in New York City.” The block-long manufacturing facility at Ninth Ave. and West 15th Street–then owned by the National Biscuit Company (aka Nabisco)–was ground zero for the treat that would soon emerge as the best friend a glass of milk ever had.
And so, many shops within Chelsea Market are celebrating National Oreo Day with specials available through Marech 8, while supplies last. The list of limited time treats includes:
- Oreo mango cheesecake, Ayada
- Oreos served with bacon caramel dipping sauce & fresh whipped cream, Dickson’s Farmstand Meats
- Oreo Gulab Jamun Cheesecake, Chote Miya
- Mini Oreo doughnuts, Doughnuttery
- Assorted international Oreos, Economy Candy
- Cookies and cream cocktail, ARTECHOUSE NYC
- Fried Oreos and cookies-and-cream milkshake, Creamline
- Oreo brownie, Fat Witch Bakery
- Gluten-free Oreo taiyaki, Kimbap Lab
- Chocolate covered Oreos, Li-Lac Chocolates
- Iced Oreo cookie matcha latte and iced Oreo cream latte, Muji
- ‘Not My First Oreo” cocktail and Oreo cream stuffed milk bun, N’Between
Chelsea Market is located at 75 Ninth Avenue (btw W. 15th & 16th Sts.). Concourse/Market Hours are 7am to 10pm, daily. To visit Chelsea Market online, click here.
