New Leadership at the 10th Precinct & Confirmation of 12/27 Community Council Meeting  / Flatiron/NoMad Partnership’s Winter Glow / Holiday Caroling

New Leadership at the 10th Precinct (230 W. 20th St. btw. 7th & 8th Aves.) | Note: See the final section of this paragraph for updated info. | From the Twitter (aka “X”) account of Chelsea’s 10th Precinct (@NYPD10Pct), a Friday, December 8 tweet noted, “The 10th Precinct welcomes our new Commanding Officer-Captain Alexander Brathwaite. He is eager to work with the communities of the Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen & Hudson Yards neighborhoods. We thank D.I. Gault for his leadership & wish him the best.” The general public’s first opportunity to meet Capt. Braithwaite–and pose questions–could happen on December 27, at the 7pm meeting of the 10th Precinct Community Council. Organized and moderated by Council President Larry O’Neill, this monthly citizen-run council meeting features a Q&A session, with the Precinct’s Commanding Officer normally in attendance to provide answers. If new leadership picks up this longstanding tradition, that’s your chance to meet him. The gathering may be in-person at the 10th Precinct or take place via Zoom. Month-to-month, that’s the Council President’s call. An announcement usually happens a week or two before the event date via an email sent from O’Neill and/or an announcement made via the Council’s Facebook page. UPDATE: On Dec. 20, 10th Precinct Community Council president Larry  O’Neill confirmed via email that the Councilwill meet at 7pm on Wed., Dec. 27 at the 10th Precinct (230 W. 20th St. btw. 7th & 8th Aves.). said O’Neill in his email message, “Come meet the new commanding officer of the 10th Precinct-Capt. Brathwaite.”

Control No Control: On View through January 1 at Flatiron North Plaza (Broadway, Fifth Ave. & 23rd St.) | Luminous, large, intriguing, inviting: This interactive installation is central to the Flatiron NoMad Partnership slate of holiday programming known collectively as Winter Glow. Presented in partnership with the NYC Department of Transportation’s Art Program (NYC DOT Art) and created by Canadian digital art studio Iregular, the LED cube’s touch-sensitive tech generates patterns and sounds unique to its experience with each participant. “The experience is extremely intuitive, leading to quick audience engagement and prolonged interactions,” notes the press material, calling it a “sort of socio-digital experiment’ that “explores the relationship between participants and interactive installations”—making Control No Control, perhaps, a reference to the give-and-take that takes place during collaborations.  The full Winter Glow schedule of family-friendly activities is available at flatironnomad.nyc.

Holiday Caroling: Wednesday, December 20, 5pm in Mathews-Palmer Playground (445 West 45th Street btw. 9th & 10th Aves.) | NYC Council Member Erik Bottcher invites you to give voice to the spirit of the season by gathering in Mathews-Palmer Playground to sing holiday carols. “You’re welcome to sing with us (all talent levels are welcome), or just enjoy listening,” says Bottcher. Not 100% familiar with the lyrics of certain (or all) beloved holiday classics sure to make the set list? Don’t stress! Song books will be provided–and when in doubt, just move your lips and let the members of the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus fill the air with the proper words, sung with gusto and in tune!
