One was torn by multiple sources of stimulation, visual and otherwise, when attending the We Party Pride Festival, which took place at Jacob Javits Center on Saturday, June 29. This year’s edition of producer Jake Resnicow’s stalwart Pride destination hit an all-time new world record for the “Largest Nightclub Pride Event,” and “Biggest Pride Charity Event in History,” as 13,000 guests packed the spacious-is-an-understatement venue.
We Party 2019 was significant, as it served to mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots (or “Uprising,” according to taste). The unusually robust influx of international celebrants, here to attend WorldPride, made for an especially diverse edition of the Pride Festival, which provided a welcoming space for a dizzying array of proclivities and identities.
Common ground was found in the love shown for Bette Midler and Cyndi Lauper, whose brief but memorable performances whipped the already-enthused crowd into a frenzy. Also adding to the entertainment roster: An opening dance act by Beyoncé’s choreographer, Chris Grant, and special guest Brandy Norwood; and performances by the theatrical phenomenon STOMP, Billy Porter, and Zumanity Cirque du Soleil.
Between breaks from the primary draw of the night—dancing, until 6am—We Party offered no shortage of interactive and swag opportunities, including a busy “Free Manicure” table at which we’re pretty sure that was RuPaul’s Drag Race star Shangela, taking advantage of the service (one of our reporters is still sporting the lovingly applied baby blue nail polish).
Elsewhere, Instagram opportunities abounded in front of a wall collage depicting moments in the LGBTQ+ equality movement, as well as inside the silhouette of several neon-created vodka bottles from event presenter, Absolut.
Net proceeds from We Party will go to further the work of prominent LGBTQ charities, including the Stonewall Gives Back Initiative and LIFEBeat, an organization that harnesses the power of the music and entertainment industry to advocate for sex health awareness and safety.
