This Week in Chelsea: June 3-9, 2019

It’s this website’s prerogative to change its mind–or at least change formats. That’s why all of the activities you’ve enjoyed reading about in our “Today in Chelsea” section are now to be found here, fresh every Monday, in our “This Week in Chelsea” section. Keep checking this page throughout the week, because we’ll be adding new content often (listings get moved to last in cue, after the event happens). Oh, and you’ll also notice, sometimes we go outside the strictly speaking realm of Chelsea for events we’re especially fond of. Oh, that “prerogative” thing: is there anything it can’t (be made to) do?

Sunday Services with Chelsea Community Church | Chelsea Community Church was founded by lay people in 1975 and has never had a regular pastor (they do have a part-time pastoral counselor). As result of not having a regular pastor, they have a variety of guest speakers in the pulpit. Coming up at the 12 noon Sunday worship services, meeting in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Chelsea (346 W. 20th St., btw. 8th & 9th Aves.): On June 9, the guest is the nondenominational Min. Ronneak M. Lee, creator of Beloved, Beautiful and No Longer Bound, “BBANLB,” a program that ministers to young women, equipping them with tools to work on self esteem and self awareness and mental health issues. Lee earned a master’s degree in pastoral care and counseling at New Theological Seminary and currently is working on finishing her first book, to be released later this year. Special Music by Otto Walberg. On June 16, the special guest is Rev. F. Romall Smalls (Baptist), an associate minister for social justice at Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon who also serves as a senior affiliate chaplain at New York University (working with the Student Christian Movement and with Judson Memorial Church). Smalls is co-chair of LGBT Faith Leaders of African Descent, and a contributing writer for Religion News Service. For more info, visit www.chelseachurch.org.

Film Forum Jr. Spring Season | This series of classic films fit for kids and their families runs each Saturday and Sunday at 11am, through June 30. May got off to a rousing start, with Edward Scissorhands and A League of Their Own, among others. June kicked off with Harold Lloyd’s Safety Last! (1923), June 1/2. Steve Sterner provided live piano accompaniment for this sight gag-filled silent film. June 8/9, it’s director William Wyler’s 1963 musical Funny Girl, starring Barbra Streisand as Ziegfeld Follies and Broadway star Fanny Brice. On June 15/16, Spike Lee’s semi-autobiographical Crooklyn (1994) is a sharply comic look at growing up in 1970s Brooklyn. The British soccer-themed classic Bend it Like Beckham (2002) screens June 22/23—and the series wraps up June 29/30, with 1982’s screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Annie. All tickets to Film Forum Jr. screenings are $9 (children and adults). Film Forum is located at 209 W. Houston St. (w. of 6th Ave.). For the full schedule, visit www.filmforum.org.

Tues., June 9: Hudson Yards/Hell’s Kitchen Alliance Annual Meeting | Has it been a half-decade already? Yes—and The Hudson Yards Hell’s Kitchen Alliance (HYHK) is marking that milestone with their fifth annual meeting. This not-for profit organization, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of the diverse population who lives, works, and visits within the district, does so via neighborhood beautification projects, supplemental sanitation services, streetscape improvements, and technical and professional services for businesses. They also maintain and operate Hudson Blvd. Park and the surrounding areas, while programming cultural exhibits and events in the park and the district. The Annual Meeting happens Tuesday, June 4, 6-8pm on the rooftop (Clubroom) of 555 10th Ave. The Keynote Speaker is Jay Cross (President, Related Hudson Yards). There will be an MVP award and some grants given to local artists. Food will be provided by Paradis To Go—which will pair nicely with available wine, beer, soda, a “special” tequila drink, and other select spirits. For info, call 212-239-1619 or email info@hyhkalliance.org. Visit www.hyhkalliance.org. On Twitter: @HYHKAlliance.

Wed., June 5: Manhattan Community Board 4 Full Board Meeting | It’s a love letter to anyone who’s ever come across construction in their neighborhood, and said, “But nobody told me about that.” CB4 meetings are a breath of fresh air for the canary in the coal mine: an early warning for things to come, as the board reviews and debates everything from rezoning to a liquor license renewal request. It’s quality quality-of-life info at the ready, and no CB4 meeting has more to offer in that area than the monthly full board meeting, where committee letters go to the full board for vote. Show up a bit before start time, and sign up for the Public Comment section, where you get the mic for 2 minutes and can take that opportunity to make your voice heard. Wed., May 1, 6:30pm at Mount Sinai West (1000 10th Ave., 2nd Floor Conference Room B). For more info visit CB4 by clicking here.
