Of Post Offices, Parking Fines, and Tax Prep: Chelsea News You Can Use

Full Disclosure: The below info was inspired by (a less generous person might say, “lifted wholesale from”) Manhattan Community Board 4’s Upcoming Community Events Newsletter of Feb. 20, 2020. To subscribe to that Newsletter, click here.

The New High Line Postal Station | Snail mail fans, rejoice: A new postal station opened on Tues., Feb. 18, serving West Chelsea. Located at 426 W. 14 St. (btw. 9th & 10th Aves.), the appropriately named High Line Postal Station’s hours are Mon.-Fri., 10:30am-6pm. The High Line Station will be the new home for former post office boxholders from the USPS Port Authority Station.  Approximately 280 boxholders will be housed in the High Line Station, with an additional 75 post office boxes available for rent. In additional to full services at the High Line Station, local users will soon be able to step out of line for basic transactions as a self-service kiosk is due to installed in March. Stop by and give this full-service postal station your stamp of approval! For more info, click here.

New Alternate Side Parking Fines | Currently, Alternate Side Parking penalties are $65 in Manhattan below 96th Street and $45 elsewhere. The new rule, which went into effect Feb. 20, makes Alternate Side Parking fines uniform across the entire city, at $65. This change increases the effectiveness of the City’s Alternate Side Parking regulations, and helps to keep New York City healthy, safe, and clean.

Free Reusable Bags Giveaway | Starting March 1, single-use plastic bags are banned, with limited exceptions, in New York State. In addition, businesses will begin collecting a five-cent fee on paper carryout bags in New York City (this fee will not apply to any customers using SNAP or WIC). In anticipation of the Plastic Bag Ban starting March 1, Manhattan Community Board 4 is giving away free reusable bags, while supplies last, at its office. Bags are available for pick-up Mon.-Fri, 9am-5pm, at 330 W. 42nd St., 26th floor (btw. 8th & 9th Aves.). For all things CB4, click here. For more information and to get a reusable bag, visit the DSNY website by clicking here.

Go Red For Women Event: Food for the Heart | Learn to eat heart healthy through nutrition counseling for preventative care and treatment of heart disease in women. Attendees will be entered to win a raffle basket. Tues., Feb. 25, 6-8pm, at Lenox Health Greenwich Village (200 W. 13th St., btw. 7th & Greenwich Aves.).

Free Tax Prep Services | The New York Public Library Riverside Library Announces Tax Prep Services. Stop by the library for tax preparation services by AARP, for free. You must have a valid email address and bring all necessary documents and information. Thursdays, through April 9; 11am-3pm at 127 Amsterdam Ave (btw. 65th & 66th Sts.). For more info, click here.
