Flower Power To (and from) The People

BY SCOTT STIFFLER | While we’ve been staying at home and putting many things on hold, seeds of change planted months ago have taken root, and are showing their true colors throughout Chelsea.

The above photo of orange and yellow tulips, taken April 27 at the southwest corner of Ninth Ave. and W. 21st St., was planted by those in the building it buffers, noted Chelsea Garden Club’s Missy Adams. “The large bicycle lane pit [in the below photo] was planted by a couple of our members who are stuck in Austin at the moment.”

When asked about their annual Tree Pit Walking Tour—a springtime event that celebrates the work of the Club’s volunteers, who adopt tree pits and tend to their beautification—Adams said, “We may have the walk in late summer or fall. We’ll see how things go… It doesn’t seem like many of our gardeners are doing much yet. Maybe still too cold? Also, it’s hard to buy plants now, though I did just order $135 worth of plants online, so it’s not impossible.”

Find below, a few more of the Chelsea Garden Club’s handiwork. Contact the club via email, at cgc.nyc@gmail.com, and visit their Facebook page by clicking here. On that page, they note, “We are residents of West Chelsea in who have adopted the bicycle lane tree pits and donate our time and money to beautify them. Please join us and adopt a pit near you!” Joining them is as easy on the pocket as it is the schedule. “There are no dues and no formal meetings,” the note, “just a desire to keep Chelsea tree-lined and flower-filled.”
