See Them Run: Your City Council District 3 Candidate Events Calendar

The New York City Council’s District 3 is comprised of Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen, the Flatiron District, West Soho, Hudson Square, the Meatpacking District, Columbus Circle, Times Square, the Theater District, and the Garment District. This year, term limits mandate the departure of the D3’s current rep, Corey Johnson—who, since 2018, has also served as Council Speaker.

There are six candidates seeking Johnson’s City Council seat: Leslie Boghosian Murphy, Erik Bottcher, Phelan Dante Fitzpatrick, Marni Halasa, Aleta LaFargue, and Arthur Schwartz.

The following is a list of public events, policy announcements, and candidate/voter interaction opportunities—beginning with what has yet to come on the calendar, all the way through the very first event (Jan. 18, when this calendar made its debut.)

Sunday Community Cleanups | “New Yorkers come together when times get tough,” observed Erik Bottcher, who recently took leave from his work as Corey Johnson’s Chief of Staff, to concentrate on his own effort to secure that coveted District 3 seat. For the Jan. 17, 11:30am installment: In the Village, dirt didn’t stand a chance, when volunteers met at the NYC AIDS Memorial Park (at St. Vincent’s Triangle, corner of Seventh & Greenwich Aves.). In Chelsea, it was a clean sweep when volunteers showed up in force on Eighth Ave., at W. 21st St. (northwest corner). Almost thirty blocks Uptown, residents of “Clinton” called it like it is, when they met at Hell’s Kitchen Park (10th Ave. btw. 47th & 48th Sts.). All told, several dozen people came together to kick clutter to the gutter, and help maintain their own positive perception of the place they call home. Rally: Mon., Jan. 18, 1pm in front of the Stonewall Inn (53 Christopher St.) | District 3 candidate Marni Halsa invites you to this official Marni for Council 2021 campaign event on the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “People of color and the LGBTQ community,” noted Halasa in a press released prior to the event, “are core constituencies of our Council District, and know of the non-stop police harassment when it comes to their sex lives or sex work. It was the Vice Unit, which was responsible for raids on gay bars leading up to the Stonewall Riots. The Rev. Dr. King himself was an ally of the LGBTQ community, and he was targeted by Law Enforcement Agency with harassment over his sex life that culminated in a “suicide letter” sent to the Rev. Dr. King by the FBI. No Law Enforcement Agency has business extorting people like this.” If you have any questions about this action or would like further information about Halasa’s campaign, visit the website by clicking here.
