Scarlet Envy—the Louisville, KY native, favorite daughter of NYC, and RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars Season 6 contestant (whose exit left us feeling very “uncomfortable” with the show’s host)—offers Gothamites an intimate performance made accessible to worldwide audiences, when she brings her solo show ALLSTAR to the comfy confines of Lower East Side venue Caveat.
Last seen by this drag-loving website (click DRAG in the dropdown menu of our LGBTQ+ section) in an alternately smoldering and drop-dead deadpan funny performance of Reflections at the hurry-up-and-reopen-already Laurie Beechman Theatre, this updated presentation of ALLSTAR finds Scarlet covering, the press release promises, “a selection of songs reflecting her life post-RuPaul’s Drag Race. ” The track list includes “Scarlet’s inimitable covers of songs by the likes of Billie Eilish, Katy Perry, and Lana Del Rey, among others.”
We’d normally cringe at trotting out an easy-to-promise/difficult-to-deliver word like “inimitable” when describing a drag queen’s interpretive choices, especially when the set list is full of songs long ago made iconic by the, well, “inimitable” vocal stylings of their originators. But not to worry: Just as she did in Reflections, we’re betting Scarlet arrives on stage in full command of her power to share a seemingly random childhood memory or a tasty morsel about RPDR that ends up reinforcing or recontextualizing the well-known tune that follows it.
This one-night-only extravaganza takes place at 7pm EDT on Wed., Oct. 13, broadcasting to the big, brassy world from Caveat (21A Clinton St. btw. Houston & Stanton Sts.). General admission tickets are $22 in advance, $25 at the door. VIP tickets (includes reserved seating & post-show meet-and-greet) are $40 in advance, $45 at the door (no drink minimum). Those who can’t catch it at the COVID-precautions-in-place venue can watch live from home or car or pool floatie or underpass for $10 per device. Purchase tickets at www.caveat.nyc.
